Eugene, 71, also known as "Yello Bird" was born in Watonga, OK. A respected cheyenne elder, he is a Cheyenne Arrow Priest, Sundance Priest, a Fasting Priest, Native American Church Priest and Sweat Lodge Priest. Bear Butte is known as a sacred place to 17 tribes of the plains: the Lakota, the Cheyenne, and Kiowa to name just three. It is a central landmark in the spiritual landscape of North America. The Indian people treat it with the utmost reverence, the way a Christian might regard Bethlehem. The prayer flags and tobacco bundles are left as offerings of gratitude to the Creator. The people come here to fast and pray and connect with something larger than themselves. For Indian people, they are coming to church.
